Save Our Waterways
Save Our Waterways is a voluntary group that campaigns against the cuts to our British Waterways by DEFRA the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
The Campaign embraces all users of British waterways users including boaters, towpath walkers, cyclist & anglers and all those who live and work besides our great waterways.
DEFRA recently announced massive cuts to its grant-in-aid to British Waterways and the Environment Agency, these will have a massive impact on the maintenance of our waterways in England and Wales.
Just along the Leeds and Liverpool Canal DEFRA is deferring on desperately needed refurbishment work this winter. These have been put off ‘until a later date’, these are:
Embankment Refurbishment at the Calverley Wood Embankment
Stemming of leakage through embankment and raising the height of the wash wall at the Roddlesworth Embankment
Rebuilding a collapsed section of wall deferred to 2007-08 with a revised, cheaper solution at the Coates Lane Retaining Wall
This saves DEFRA just under a million pounds, but at what cost?!!?
